Next Sunday, on May 1st all Orthodox Christians will celebrate the Easter that also known as Pascha. It is most important event in the Orthodox Church calendar. In Ukraine the Monday after Easter Sunday is a public holiday, so people can have a day off from work and school.
On Easter Day Christians go to the church with Easter basket full of special food to be blessed. Usually this basket contain Paska (a type of Easter bread), pysanky (decorated eggs), ham, salo (pork fat), kovbasa, cheese, etc. Right after the ceremony the family hurries home to eat the blessed food.
"Knocking" is the one of Easter games. This game involves two players who have one egg each. They have to try to knock each other’s eggs. The player who breaks first another player's egg is a winner.
Orthodox churches calculate their Easter date as per the Julian calendar. It is different from the Gregorian calendar that is used by the Catholic Churches. Therefore the Orthodox Easter usually is later than the Catholic one.
